Corn production has a short history in Poland, although it steadily increased since 2007. From 2009 to 2014, the country’s Corn area increased by 250%. Corn production is also expanding into new areas, notably eastern Poland, where Corn was previously not viable. Additionally, more advanced inputs and better access to hybrids are raising interest among farmers in growing Corn. Corn quality varies regionally.

High yields drove MY 2020/21 Corn production to reach 4.4 million tons, a 16.5 percent increase over the previous year. Poland’s MY 2020/21 Corn area increased by 4 percent over the previous year as farmers anticipated favorable prices. In MY 2019/20, feed demand diminished due to challenges faced by the poultry industry following the pandemic.

Poland remains the European Union’s largest poultry producer and, therefore, a significant poultry feed consumer. The main Corn drivers have been the country’s fast-growing poultry industry and increasing export demand. Poland’s primary Corn users are the feed millers, farmers for on-farm feed, and the biofuel industry. On average, the country’s total Corn consumption is 3.2 million tons, of which almost 90% was used by feed industry and for on-farm animal feed. Domestic human consumption of Corn is small and amounts to 25,000 tons.

Poland is a net Corn exporter. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development data, for January-September this year, Poland received 1,428,778 tons of Corn grain. For comparison, last year, 2021, the volume of Corn grain imports in the same period was 147,814 tons. The countries from which Poland imports Corn to the greatest extent are Ukraine – 1,299,772 tons, followed by Argentina (57,200 tons) and Slovakia (22,852 tons).

However, looking at the information on Corn grain exports from the country, these values are equally high. In 2022, between January and September, Corn exports from the country amounted to 2,768,549 tons, with the most significant quantities received by Germany (1,322,044 tons), the Netherlands (464,026 tons), and the United Kingdom (232,971 tons). In the first ten months of MY 2017/18, Corn exports in value terms reached $213 million.

According to the AgFlow data, the United Kingdom led their export market with 143,958 tons in 2021-2022, followed by Belgium (77,616 tons), the Netherlands (59,629 tons), France (59,400 tons), Senegal (38,900 tons), and Ireland (38,878 tons). Other minor importers were Algeria, Nigeria, Sweden, Germany, and Estonia. In terms of import, Poland purchased 121,300 tons and 30,000 tons from Argentina and Ukraine, respectively.
